Guardian Angels
When you finish reading this lesson go to the Work Sheet.
There is much speculation about guardian angels. You will hear many stories about guardian angels, but what does the Bible teach? What are the facts according to the Bible. Not everyone gets a guardian angel. In Psalms 34:7 a guardian angel is around those who fear the Lord.
"The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them." (Psalms 34:7)
This indicates that a guardian angel is not around the lost.
The Bible states that children have guardian angels.
"Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven." (Matthew 18:10)
As you watch a child, you can see why they need a guardian angel. I know that some children wear out two or three guardian angels.
There is nothing mentioned in the Bible about a guardian angel staying with a child after he/she becomes an adult. The Bible indicates that only those who are saved have a guardian angel. It is strongly indicated in the Bible that those who fear the Lord and serve him in a special way have a guardian angel. The following are some of those who were protected by guardian angels.
HAGAR & ISHMAEL
Hagar, the handmaid of Sarah, with her son Ishmael were about to die when a guardian angel provided water for them.
"15 And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.
16 And she went, and sat her down over against [him] a good way off, as it were a bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against [him], and lift up her voice, and wept.
17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he [is].
18 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation.
19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink." (Genesis 21:15-19)
LOT, LOT S WIFE, and 2 DAUGHTERS
The city where Lot and his family lived was about to be destroyed with fire. A guardian angel took Lot, his wife, and two daughters out of the city for protection.
"15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.
16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city." (Genesis 19:15-16)
ELIJAH
A guardian angel provided food for Elijah.
"4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I [am] not better than my fathers.
5 And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise [and] eat.
6 And he looked, and, behold, [there was] a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.
7 And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise [and] eat; because the journey [is] too great for thee.
8 And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God." (1 Kings 19:4-8)
The food that he ate gave him enough strength to last him forty days without eating again.
HEZEKIAH & JERUSALEM
A guardian angel protected Hezekiah and the city of Jerusalem from the army of Assyria and anyone else that would come against them.
"21 And the LORD sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels slew him there with the sword.
22 Thus the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all [other], and guided them on every side." (2 Chronicles 32:21-22)
SHADRACH, MESHACH, & ABEDNEGO
A guardian angel was with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace.
"[Then] Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed [be] the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king's word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God." (Daniel 3:28)
The angel protected all three from the fire as they walked around in the fire.
DANIEL
A guardian angel was with Daniel in the den of lions. The angel kept the lions from hurting Daniel.
"20 And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: [and] the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?
21 Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever.
22 My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.
23 Then was the king exceeding glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God." (Daniel 6:20-23)
JOSEPH, MARY, & JESUS
A guardian angel protected Joseph, Mary, and Jesus from Herod. The angel told them to go to Egypt until the death of Herod.
"13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.
14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:
15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son." (Matthew 2:13-15)
LAZARUS
Guardian angels were present at the death of Lazarus to protect him from Satan, the prince of the power of the air, as they led him through the air on out to Heaven.
"And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;" (Luke 16:22)
APOSTLES
A guardian angel opened the prison doors and set the apostles free.
"18 And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison.
19 But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said,"
(Acts 5:18-19)
PETER
A guardian angel was sent to deliver Peter out of the hands of sixteen soldiers and set him free from prison.
"And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and [from] all the expectation of the people of the Jews."
(Acts 12:11)
PAUL
A guardian angel was sent to protect Paul during a storm on the sea.
"22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of [any man's] life among you, but of the ship.
23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,
24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.
25 Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me."
(Acts 27:22-25)
SAVED
Guardian angels are sent to help and protect those who are saved.
"13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?
14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?"
(Hebrews 1:13-14)
NATION OF ISRAEL
A guardian angel was always with the Nation of Israel to protect them from other nations as God led them to the promised land.
"19 And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them:
20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness [to them], but it gave light by night [to these]: so that the one came not near the other all the night."
(Exodus 14)19-20
"Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared." (Exodus 23:20)
"1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Depart, [and] go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it:
2 And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite: 3 Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou [art] a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way". (Exodus 33:1-3)
