Angels Lesson 9

The Work Of Angels In Judgment

When you finish reading this lesson go to the Work Sheet.

Angels are used by God to bring his judgment or punishment upon those who sin against him.  Before God would destroy Sodom with fire, two of his angels caused the men of the city that had surrounded the house of Lot to become blind.
"10  But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.
11  And they smote the men that [were] at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they  wearied themselves to find the door."     (Genesis 19:10-11)
These men were there to commit homosexual acts on the two angels.  Lot tried to stop them, but could not  and the angels put a stop to it all.

God told Balaam that he was not to go with the men of the king of Moab.  The king of Moab, Balak, wanted Balaam to curse the nation of Israel.  Balaam saddled his donkey and went with the men.  On the way God sent an angel to kill Balaam.
"22  And God's anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants [were] with him.
23  And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way."  (Numbers 22:22-23)
At first only the donkey could see the angel and would move out of the way of the angel to protect Balaam.  Balaam did not understand and beat the donkey each time it moved out of the way of the angel.  God opened the eyes of Balaam that he might see the angel and when he did, Balaam repented.

An angel was sent to curse the city of  Meroz because the people would not help Israel in time of war.
"Curse ye Meroz, said the angel of the LORD, curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof; because they came not to the help of the LORD, to the help of the LORD against the mighty."  (Judges 5:23)

King David took a census of the nation of Israel which God did not want.  God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem.
"15  So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men.
16  And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite."  (2 Samuel 24:15-16)
God changed his mind and  did not destroy Jerusalem.

God sent an angel to bring judgment upon the army of the Assyrians.  This angel in one night killed 185,00 soldiers.
"And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they [were] all dead corpses."  (2 Kings 19:35)

God's angels will punish and persecute those who go against him. "
"5. Let them be as chaff before the wind: and let the angel of the LORD chase them.
6  Let their way be dark and slippery: and let the angel of the LORD persecute them."    (Psalms 35:5-6)

God brought judgment upon Egypt so that the nation of Israel could be set free.  One of the judgments that God sent was to send evil angels among the Egyptians.
"He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels [among them]."  (Psalms 78:49)

Angels will be used at the end of the world to separate the lost from the saved.
"49  So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,
50  And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth."
(Matthew 13:49-50)
The lost will stand before the Great White Throne to be judged and cast into the lake of fire.

Herod Agrippa went before the people in his royal apparel and sat upon this throne.  When he spoke to the people, they gave praise to him as a god and he accepted it.  God sent an angel to cause Herod to be eaten of worms and die that very moment.
"And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost."  (Acts 12:23)

God will use angels to bring different kinds of punishment upon the world during the Tribulation Period.  This punishment is in the future as described in the book of Revelation.  The following are some of the things or means by which the angels will bring judgment upon the earth:

*Four angels will use the four winds  of the earth.
"And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree."  (Revelation 7:1)

*An angel will use voices, thundering, lightnings, and an earthquake.
"And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast [it] into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake."    (Revelation 8:5)

*An angel will use hail and fire mingled with blood.
"The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up."  (Revelation 8:7)

*An angel will use a great mass as if it were a great mountain burning with fire.
"8  And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
9  And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed."  (Revelation 8:8-9)

*An angel will use a great star from heaven.
"10  And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;
11  And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter."       (Revelation 8:10-11)

*An angel will cause the earth to rotate faster so that a twenty four hour day will
become a sixteen hour day.

"And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise."  (Revelation 8:12)
Each day will be eight hours of daylight and eight hours of darkness.

*The angel, Apollyon, will use his army from the bottomless pit to torment mankind for five months.
"And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him  was given the key of the bottomless pit."  (Revelation 9:1)
"And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment [was] as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man."  (Revelation 9:5)
"And they had a king over them, [which is] the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue [is] Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath [his] name Apollyon."    (Revelation 9:11)

*Four angels will kill a third of mankind.
"14  Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.
15  And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men." (Revelation 9:14-15)

*An angel will use sores.
"And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and [upon] them which worshipped his image."  (Revelation 16:2)

*An angel will use blood in the sea.
"And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead [man]: and every living soul died in the sea."  (Revelation 16:3)

*An angel will turn the rivers and springs into blood.
"And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood."
(Revelation 16:4)

*An angel will use the sun to scorch men with great heat.
"8  And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9  And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these
plagues: and they repented not to give him glory."  (Revelation 16:8-9)

*An angel will use great darkness.
"10  And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,
11  And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their
deeds."  (Revelation 16:10-11)

*An angel will use voices, thunders, lightnings, an earthquake, and great hail.
"17  And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.
18  And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, [and] so great.
19  And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of  the fierceness of his wrath.
20  And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.
21  And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, [every stone] about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great."
(Revelation 16:17-21)

*An angel will use the key of the bottomless pit to bind the Devil for one thousand
  years.
"1  And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
2  And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
3  And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season."  (Revelation 20:1-3)

*Michael with his angels will have a war against the Devil and his angels.
"And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels," (Revelation 12:7)

This war will be at the Rapture.
